≡ menu home list of all articles recommended reading list contact me how to study effectively by valevictory on july 13, 2015 as someone who values by free time greatly finding a way to study effectively but efficiently was important to me. i read article after article and book after book about different methods of studying and experimented with different routines. i finally landed on a magical formula that both worked stunningly and gave me unprecedented amounts of free time. nowadays i almost feel guilty about how little i have to study to maintain my straight a’s (but not really). studying should be treated almost like a 9-5 job. the way i suggest studying is by setting up a study window in which you study during certain specified blocks. during these study hours you set up the situation in such a way that procrastination is almost impossible and it is difficult not to study. the way to do this is by setting up a loose schedule. the schedule is loose because you essentially set it up at the beginning of each quarter and, except for minor changes, leave it be. first you put in the things you have to do like your classes, sections, and meals. then you set a window, usually from your first class to when you get dinner, which is your study window. during this window any time you are not doing anything else like going to class or eating you study. when you study you should be in a remote location free of distractions. i like to go in an isolated corner of the library and put my phone into my zipped backpack. when you do this it is awkward not to study as you would just be sitting there staring at a wall for hours. being productive during this period must be non-negotiable! here is an example schedule i made to demonstrate this system. i chose random class times and structured the rest of the day around them. so in this example your study window would be from when you wake up at 8 am to when you finish dinner at 8 pm, a period of 12 hours. during that time, you will have 5 hours to actually study (1.5 hours after the gym and before your last class and 3.5 hours between your last class and the start of dinner). in the proceeding 12 hours until the next morning, assuming you have to wake up at 8 am again, you will have 3.5 hours of free time (between dinner and going to bed) and 8.5 hours to sleep. the beauty of this schedule is that it is completely customizable. the only thing set in stone are your class times and everything else can be adjusted (meal times, numbers of hours you sleep, ect.). you can add in any special events or weekly extracurricular activities you have to or want to do. notice that i do not specify every day exactly what i will be doing during my study hours. use your judgement when prioritizing what to study and in what order. do the things that are the most important and need to get done the soonest first. the reason i don’t like to block out time for specific assignments is your workload is always changing, this takes extra time and effort, and it is difficult to predict how long finishing an assignment takes. if you finish all the work you need to do before the block is over, start working on things due farther in the future or studying for tests coming up in a few weeks. the only time you should give yourself a break day is when you absolutely have nothing to work on. this often happens to me sometime during finals week to the chagrin of my friends pulling back to back all-nighters and not showering for days at a time. on the other hand if the work starts piling up you will have to supplement your study blocks with some extra studying after. when i get overloaded with work i like to do the hard stuff like writing essays or making note cards during the study block and then the more fun and relaxing stuff like reading a textbook or novel for an english class in the evening. finally as unpleasant as it is to do work on the weekends, saturday and sunday offer huge blocks of extra time if you need it. one of the best benefits of this system is that it prevents the horrible half-studying, half-procrastinating way of doing things many students are familiar with. no more kind of working on your paper while browsing facebook on your phone and always stressing about what you have to do no matter what you are doing. you know exactly when you will be studying so when you are in one of your free time period you can completely relax!
